Rural Vermont presents a discussion of local food and sustainability at the Monitor Barn in Jonesville, VT. “Local Food Local Rules”, documents the 2011, Rural Vermont annual meeting May 4. The evening was a great gathering with attendees and Rural Vermont members from all over the state. Keynote speaker Bob, St. Peter , Executive Director of Food for Maine’s Future came to Vermont to speak about the food sovereignty campaign they have waged in Maine. Through the work of this campaign, several Maine towns have passed local food and self governance ordinances in their towns in order to ensure the preservation of their culture of small-scale farming and ensure the livelihoods of those living in their rural areas. Faced with similar issues in Vermont, Rural Vermont is exploring the options of running a town-meeting day campaign to address local food issues by passing similar food sovereignty resolutions and ordinances throughout Vermont.
