Mill Girls: French Canadians In The Winooski Mills - The work world of the 19th century was a place of dramatic change. The creation of factory centers and the new ways of working with time clocks and mill whistles setting the pace and timing of work were all new. In the middle of the 19th century, mill owners began to recruit and hire immigrant labor, especially French Canadians. Dr. Susan Ouelette, a professor of History and American Studies at St. Michaels College, explores the role of these immigrant laborers, both in the mills, as well as in the communities in which they became a large part.
