The Greater Burlington Multicultural Resource Center hosts keynote speaker Ilyasah Shabazz, civil rights activist, author, and third daughter of Malcolm X, delivers the 2016 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day keynote address. Ms. Shabazz is known for her memoir, Growing up X, for which she won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Nonfiction Literary Work. At the event, the Greater Burlington Multicultural Resource Center honors this year’s recipients of the 2016 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award: Jan Demers, Executive Director of the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity (CVOEO), for her work helping homeless and economically disadvantaged community members; and Jay Diaz, Public Advocate for the ACLU of Vermont, for his untiring work to promote stability, access, and equal opportunity to low income Vermont children. The Mission of the Greater Burlington Multicultural Resource Center (GBMRC) is to increase awareness and provide opportunities to celebrate, promote and support cultural diversity within our community.
